Blu Pingoy

Pioneering Pinay Pilot

For a girl with a dream, one of the biggest struggles is when you don’t have any female role models to emulate. Blu Pingoy decided to overcome this hurdle by being that female role model for other girls. She opens up the idea that piloting is not just for men, and that girls can do it, too.

Blu’s uncle Albert inspired her love for flying. He was a doctor pilot who had small planes that he let her try in high school. He guided her and gave her life lessons until she reached the airlines, and she credits him as her greatest inspiration. She also cites her sisters and friends for being completely supportive of her – she never felt they questioned her ability to accomplish her goals.

Blu is an example of generosity and trust in the next generation. Her heart to serve them gives aspiring female pilots hope to pursue their passions.

Even in 2019, there are still certain roles that, when taken on by a woman, make some people raise their eyebrows. Flying is one of them. Twenty-nine year old Blu Pingoy never let perceptions keep her from living her dream, and today, this successful pilot is helping promote the idea that flying is as much a career for women as it is for men, and encouraging Filipinas of all ages to pursue their passions.

Hailing from South Cotabato, this proud Koronodaleña initially considered a future in medicine, even graduating with a degree in Nursing. It was a career encouraged by her parents, but her life would shift trajectories when her interest in aviation was sparked by conversations with her Uncle Albert, a medical pilot.

Today, Blu’s journey has come full circle, and she has become a strong advocate for—and living proof of—the idea that young girls can turn their dreams into reality, whatever those dreams might be.

After graduating from university, Blu took the plunge and enrolled in flying school, eventually becoming one of Cebu Pacific Air’s pilots in 2016. Despite their initial hopes that Blu would continue down the path to becoming a doctor, her parents, sisters, and friends offered her their full encouragement. This strong support system is one of the things Blu credits her success to: from the initial glimmer of inspiration from her uncle, to her grandfather pushing her through the years of studying, and the final, all-important push from her father that got her past the often trying final months of training before being granted her pilot’s stripes.

Several years into her career, Blu is steadily rising through the ranks at one of the country’s biggest and most successful airlines. She is looking forward to the future, with plans to further her education by pursuing a Master’s Degree in Airline Management.

Blu jokes that her greatest challenge in becoming a female pilot was her motion sickness, but for a girl with a dream, one of the hardest struggles to overcome is not having female role models to look up to. Today, Blu’s journey has come full circle, and she has become a strong advocate for—and living proof of—the idea that young girls can turn their dreams into reality, whatever those dreams might be.
