Cindy Burdette serves as the CEO of ALLCARE, a start-up that provides a healthcare benefits platform to freelancers and solopreneurs. She’s someone who worked hard to pursue her goals and make them happen, despite the challenges she faced.

As someone working in an industry that is dominated by men, Cindy learned what it meant to navigate the business. She encountered instances of gender bias in the field–and she had to work hard to prove her worth. “Screw gender bias. It’s not that it doesn’t exist; it does,” she shares. “But the amount of attention we, women, give to it is in our control. Acknowledge it exists, and just work your butt off like any hardworking person.”

Give yourself integrity and competency and it won’t matter what gender you are. If you’re the best, it will come out very clearly.

Cindy took inspiration from Gemma, her mother. Gemma was born in Surigao and lived a hard life. She now lives in Maine and does well for herself as a pharmacist. Gemma finished her college degree at 45, and all throughout her life demonstrated perseverance to the core. In addition, Cindy draws her strength from the rest of her family, mentors, and God. All of them have been with her every step of the way. “It’s not easy to make a name anywhere when you come from a small town. Everything’s a blessing.” It’s this positive and persistent outlook that helps Cindy achieve so much in the face of challenges.

How does Cindy encourage the next generation of women tech entrepreneurs? Give yourself integrity and competency and it won’t matter what gender you are. If you’re the best, it will come out very clearly.”
